  • Life in Thailand

Joyce 1 045 IGo first week 001 IGo first week 004 IGo first week 005 Joyce 1 044 IGo first week 007 Life is filled to the max!! The first class is at 7:30, and the last class is over at 3:00. We do have an hour of study time in there, plus time off for lunch. The classes have been incredible! I've learrned so much already!! We have about 4 hours of homework every day. There's lots of reports to write, textbooks to read, we had to read the books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and for the TESOL class we have to come up with lesson plans for an English class. On Fri. we each taught in front of the class for 5 minutes and this week it's gotta be a half hour class done with a partner. So there's not a whole lot of time for socializing, but we do fit that in sometimes!! :) Supper is at 5:30, and on Tues. and Thurs. nights we go to a local gym and play v-ball for a couple hours. Mon. and Fri. nights are ministry nights. There were about 4 different options for that. LaRonda, Brian, and I go to Chiang Mia City Church and teach English to the kids that come. I have the littlest ones and they are incredibly cute!! I love them already! They really don't know any English, so I gotta have a translater. Wed. nights and weekends are free, but that's usually when we catch up on big projects or just hang out. I'm also on Student Council which means we have to plan Fri. morning chapels. Yesterday we went up the mountain to a very famous Buddhist temple.

OK, I really don't know how to make this stuff look like I want it to and I don't have the time to figure it out! I think Facebook is ever so much simpler!!

  • First Day at School

Yesterday was our first day on a schedule. We had orientation all day. The first thing we did was tell the group how we came to the school. Then different of the faculty spoke about their area of ministry and how it's going to involve us. Later in the afternoon we did different team building activities. Probably the scariest one for me was the one where everyone in your group gets blindfolded except for one. Then we had to blindly do exactly what our leader told us to do. Things like walking around on top of a circle of benches. It was built in a curve and so you couldn't walk in a straight line. Plus it had lots of breaks in it where you had to jump down and then climb up onto the next one. It definitely took a LOT of trust- something I don't have a lot of! Last evening was solitude night. Something we do as part of the mentoring program. It means you spend time alone and we had writing assignments and also other things we were supposed to do. Just so you know, I'm not going to blog everything we do, because this is not the U.S. Get it??? Today is our first day of classes. I think it's going to be a very intense, stretching time! It's been good so far though. The other students are a great group, and with only 4 of us girls we've been having a lot of fun!1Semester2009 001 Here we are. Back row is: Josh Wagler, Ben Peters (dean),---, Brian Shenk, Lavon Slabaugh, Victor Helmuth, Bronson Yoder. Front row: Nathan King,---, Heidi Gingerich (dean), Rosa King, Joyce Shoemaker, Karen Yoder, LaRonda Schrock.

  • Traveling to Thailand

Well, I'm now in Thailand!!! :) I left the house at 2:00 am on Wed. From Atlanta I flew to D.C. then to L.A. then to Tokyo, Japan and  now I'm in Bangkok. A total of about 25 hours in the air!! Somehow, our flights  were rerouted, and I didn't meet the others until Japan. We arrived in Bankok around 1:00 am, ate at  a cool Chinese place in the airport, and are now  waiting for our  8:00 am flight to Chiang Mai. That's our last flight and it's only about a 1-2 hour flight. It's about 4:30 am Fri. now, so I should see if I can get a nap in. It's been a LONG day. How I  wish for a long shower and comfortable bed!! :)

  • grACE 179 Hey, I'm trying to figure out how Xanga works! I'm on Facebook, but some of my friends really wanted me to do a blog where anyone, not just members, can see what I post. So here goes! :) I'm going to see if  I can post a picture of last week-end when Grace Oatney and Lydia Fisher were here.
